Mississippi State's Gulf Scholars Program cohort attends the National Gulf Scholars Conference in Gainesville to learn about Gulf-Related Research Initiatives and Network with other faculty and students from schools across the Gulf Region.
The Gulf Scholars Program (GSP) is a multi-institution, interdisciplinary undergraduate initiative funded by the Gulf Research Program, a division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. It’s designed to prepare the next generation of leaders to address complex environmental, social, health, and energy challenges facing communities throughout the Gulf of Mexico region.
Participating students come from any discipline, including sciences, engineering, humanities, arts, and social sciences, and engage in curricular, co-curricular, and experiential opportunities tied to key regional challenges.
The focus centers on the Gulf Research Program’s core thematic areas:
• Community health and resilience
• Environmental protection and stewardship
• Offshore energy safety
These themes guide student learning and projects, ensuring applied relevance to societal and ecosystem needs in Gulf communities.
Gulf Scholars are expected to develop the following competencies as part of their academic and experiential trajectory:
1. Knowledge of the Gulf Region: Deep understanding of the gulf’s human, ecological, and physical systems.
2. Multidisciplinary and Integrative Learning: Ability to synthesize concepts across academic and community contexts.
3. Intercultural Knowledge and Competencies: Skills in effective engagement across diverse cultures.
4. Social Responsibility and Ethical Reasoning: Capacity to consider civic impacts, equity, and sustainability in decision-making.
5. Innovation and Entrepreneurialism: Aptitude for developing creative, practical solutions.
6. Gulf Impact Project: A mentored research, applied, or creative project grounded in one or more of the program’s thematic focus areas.
